Role:ComposerAlex Kehler was born on May 12, 1978, in Toronto, Canada. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional violinist and his mother a pianist. From a young age, Kehler showed a natural talent for music and began playing the violin at the age of four. Kehler's parents recognized his potential and encouraged him to pursue music seriously. He began taking private lessons and quickly progressed, winning several competitions and awards throughout his childhood and teenage years. In addition to the violin, Kehler also learned to play the viola, cello, and piano. He was particularly drawn to the Baroque period and began studying historical performance practices, including playing on period instruments and using historically informed techniques. After completing his undergraduate degree in music performance at the University of Toronto, Kehler went on to earn a master's degree in historical performance from the Juilliard School in New York City. During his time at Juilliard, Kehler had the opportunity to study with some of the world's leading Baroque musicians, including William Christie and Jordi Savall. Following his studies, Kehler began performing professionally as a soloist and chamber musician. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented and versatile Baroque musicians of his generation, performing with some of the world's leading ensembles, including Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, Les Violons du Roy, and the Academy of Ancient Music. In addition to his performing career, Kehler also began composing his own music. His compositions were heavily influenced by the Baroque period, but also incorporated elements of contemporary classical music and folk music from around the world. Kehler's most notable works include his Violin Concerto in D Major, which was premiered by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 2010, and his Suite for Solo Viola, which has been performed by numerous soloists around the world. Kehler's music is characterized by its intricate melodies, complex harmonies, and virtuosic instrumental writing. He often incorporates elements of improvisation into his compositions, giving his music a unique and spontaneous quality. Despite his success as a composer and performer, Kehler remains humble and dedicated to his craft.
