Corina Belcea is a Romanian-born violinist who has established herself as one of the most accomplished classical musicians of her generation. Born in 1970 in Bucharest, Romania, Belcea began playing the violin at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She studied at the George Enescu Music School in Bucharest before moving to London to continue her studies at the Royal Academy of Music. Belcea's early career was marked by a series of impressive performances and awards. In 1991, she won first prize at the Carl Flesch International Violin Competition in London, and in 1992 she was awarded the prestigious Yehudi Menuhin Prize for her outstanding musicianship. These early successes helped to establish Belcea as a rising star in the classical music world, and she quickly began to attract attention from some of the most respected musicians and conductors in the industry. Over the years, Belcea has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. She has also collaborated with some of the most celebrated musicians of our time, including pianist Martha Argerich and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. One of Belcea's most notable achievements was the founding of the Belcea Quartet in 1994. The quartet quickly gained a reputation for its innovative and dynamic performances, and it has since become one of the most respected and sought-after string quartets in the world. The quartet has performed at many of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including the Wigmore Hall in London, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Salzburg Festival. Belcea's work with the Belcea Quartet has earned her numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2001, the quartet won the Gramophone Award for Best Chamber Music Recording for their album of Beethoven's String Quartets, Op. 18. In 2012, they were awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Chamber Music Award, and in 2016 they were named Ensemble of the Year at the International Classical Music Awards. Despite her many achievements, Belcea remains committed to her craft and continues to push the boundaries of classical music.
