Michael Kurek is a contemporary American composer, born on August 17, 1955, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a professional violinist and his mother a pianist. Kurek began playing the piano at the age of four and later learned to play the violin and viola. He attended the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in music, and later went on to earn a Master of Music degree from the University of Michigan. Kurek's musical career began as a violist, performing with various orchestras and chamber ensembles. However, he soon discovered his passion for composition and began studying with renowned composers such as William Bolcom and Leslie Bassett. Kurek's early works were heavily influenced by the music of the Romantic era, particularly the works of Brahms and Tchaikovsky. Kurek's breakthrough as a composer came in 1990 when he won the prestigious BMI Student Composer Award for his work "Concerto for Viola and Orchestra." This led to numerous commissions and performances of his works by orchestras and ensembles across the United States and Europe. Kurek's music has been described as "accessible yet sophisticated," with a focus on melody and harmony. One of Kurek's most notable works is his Symphony No. 2, "In Memoriam," which was commissioned by the Nashville Symphony Orchestra and premiered in 2010. The symphony is a tribute to the victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks and features a hauntingly beautiful melody that is repeated throughout the work. The symphony has been performed by numerous orchestras across the United States and has received critical acclaim for its emotional depth and musical craftsmanship. Another notable work by Kurek is his "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra," which was commissioned by the Nashville Symphony Orchestra and premiered in 2015. The concerto features a virtuosic solo violin part and showcases Kurek's ability to blend traditional classical forms with contemporary harmonies and rhythms. Kurek's music has been performed by numerous orchestras and ensembles, including the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has also been commissioned to write works for soloists such as violinist Joshua Bell and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. In addition to his work as a composer, Kurek is also a respected music educator. He has taught at Vanderbilt University, Belmont University, and the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt. Kurek is also the author of the book "The Sound of Beauty: A Classical Composer on Music in the Spiritual Life," which explores the relationship between music and spirituality. Overall, Michael Kurek is a talented and accomplished composer whose music has been praised for its emotional depth and musical craftsmanship. His works have been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and soloists, and he continues to be a respected figure in the classical music world.
