Chiayu is a contemporary classical music composer who was born in Taiwan in 1985. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a composer. From a young age, Chiayu was exposed to classical music and began playing the piano at the age of four. As a child, Chiayu showed a natural talent for music and began composing her own pieces at the age of eight. She continued to study music throughout her childhood and teenage years, eventually earning a degree in composition from the National Taiwan University of Arts. After completing her studies, Chiayu moved to the United States to further her education and pursue a career in music. She earned a master's degree in composition from the University of Michigan and later a doctorate in composition from the University of California, Berkeley. Throughout her career, Chiayu has composed a wide range of works, including orchestral pieces, chamber music, and solo works for various instruments. Her music is known for its intricate harmonies, complex rhythms, and use of extended techniques. One of Chiayu's most notable works is her "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra," which was premiered by the Taiwan Philharmonic Orchestra in 2015. The piece features a virtuosic piano part and a lush orchestral accompaniment, showcasing Chiayu's skill as both a composer and pianist. Another highlight of Chiayu's career is her "String Quartet No. 1," which was commissioned by the Kronos Quartet and premiered in 2018. The piece explores the sonic possibilities of the string quartet, with each instrument taking on a unique role in the composition. In addition to her work as a composer, Chiayu is also an accomplished pianist and has performed her own works in concerts around the world. She has collaborated with a wide range of musicians and ensembles, including the San Francisco Symphony, the New York Philharmonic, and the International Contemporary Ensemble. Despite her success as a composer and performer, Chiayu remains humble and dedicated to her craft. She continues to push the boundaries of classical music and explore new sonic territories, earning her a reputation as one of the most innovative composers of her generation.
