Artist Info
Variant 6 is a classical music ensemble that specializes in vocal music. The group was founded in 2013 by six professional singers who shared a passion for early and contemporary music. The ensemble's name is derived from the concept of "variant" in music, which refers to a different version of a musical theme or motif. The founding members of Variant 6 are sopranos Rebecca Myers and Elisa Sutherland, mezzo-sopranos Steven Bradshaw and James Reese, tenor Daniel Schwartz, and bass-baritone James Dargan. All six singers have extensive experience in choral and solo performance, and have performed with prestigious ensembles such as the Philadelphia Singers, the Westminster Choir, and the Choral Arts Society of Philadelphia. Since its founding, Variant 6 has become known for its innovative programming and dynamic performances. The ensemble's repertoire spans from medieval chant to contemporary works, and often features lesser-known pieces alongside more familiar ones. The group's performances are characterized by their precision, clarity, and expressive power. One of Variant 6's most notable performances was its debut concert in 2013, which featured works by composers such as Josquin des Prez, William Byrd, and Arvo Pärt. The concert was well-received by audiences and critics alike, and established the ensemble as a rising force in the Philadelphia music scene. In the years since its founding, Variant 6 has continued to perform at a variety of venues and events. The group has been featured in concerts and festivals throughout the United States, including the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, the American Choral Directors Association Eastern Division Conference, and the Boston Early Music Festival. In addition to its live performances, Variant 6 has also released several recordings. The ensemble's debut album, "Dissolving Music," was released in 2016 and features works by contemporary composers such as David Lang and Caroline Shaw. The album received critical acclaim and was named one of the top classical recordings of the year by The Philadelphia Inquirer. Variant 6 has also been recognized for its contributions to the music community. In 2015, the ensemble was awarded a grant from the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage to support the creation of a new work by composer Ted Hearne. The resulting piece, "Sound from the Bench," premiered in 2017 and was hailed as a "powerful and timely" work by The Philadelphia Inquirer. Overall, Variant 6 has established itself as a dynamic and innovative ensemble that is dedicated to exploring the rich and diverse world of vocal music. With its talented singers, innovative programming, and commitment to excellence, the group is sure to continue making waves in the classical music world for years to come.More....
