His father was a violinist and his mother was a singer. Groitzsch showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at a young age. Groitzsch received his formal musical education at the Leipzig Conservatory, where he studied composition with Felix Mendelssohn. One of Groitzsch's early successes was his Piano Concerto No. 1, which he composed in 1850. The concerto was well-received and helped establish Groitzsch's reputation as a composer. He went on to compose several more piano concertos, as well as numerous chamber works and symphonies. In 1856, Groitzsch was appointed as the conductor of the Leipzig Philharmonic Orchestra. He held this position for several years and helped to establish the orchestra as one of the finest in Europe. During his tenure, Groitzsch also continued to compose and his works were regularly performed by the orchestra. One of Groitzsch's most famous works is his Symphony No. 3, which he composed in 1865. Groitzsch continued to compose throughout his life, but his output slowed in his later years. He died on December 12, 1899, in Leipzig, Germany.
