Pierrette Alarie was a Canadian soprano who was born on November 9, 1921, in Montreal, Quebec. She was the daughter of a violinist and a pianist, and her parents recognized her musical talent at a young age. Alarie began studying piano and voice at the age of six, and by the time she was a teenager, she was performing in public concerts. Alarie's talent was recognized by the famous Canadian conductor Wilfrid Pelletier, who invited her to perform with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra when she was just 16 years old. This performance marked the beginning of Alarie's career as a professional musician. In 1940, Alarie won the Metropolitan Opera Auditions of the Air, which was a national competition for young singers. This victory led to her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City in 1941, where she performed the role of Oscar in Verdi's "Un ballo in maschera." Alarie's performance was well-received, and she quickly became a favorite of audiences and critics alike. Over the next few years, Alarie continued to perform at the Metropolitan Opera, as well as other major opera houses around the world. She was known for her clear, bright voice and her ability to convey emotion through her singing. Some of her most famous roles included Gilda in Verdi's "Rigoletto," Rosina in Rossini's "The Barber of Seville," and Susanna in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro." In addition to her opera performances, Alarie was also a popular concert singer. She performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. She was particularly known for her performances of French art songs, and she recorded several albums of this repertoire. Throughout her career, Alarie received many awards and honors. In 1950, she was made a Member of the Order of Canada, which is one of the country's highest civilian honors. She also received the Prix Calixa-Lavallée, which is awarded to outstanding Canadian musicians, in 1951. In 1955, she was awarded the Medal of the City of Paris, and in 1960, she was made a Knight of the Order of the Legion of Honor, which is one of France's highest honors. Despite her success, Alarie remained humble and dedicated to her craft. She continued to perform well into her 60s, and she was known for her warm personality and her willingness to help young singers. She passed away on July 10, 2011, at the age of 89, but her legacy as one of Canada's greatest classical musicians lives on.
