Born on 12th June 1945 in Glasgow, Scotland, McIlwham showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. His parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue his passion for music. McIlwham's musical journey began when he joined the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. He studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and composer, Ronald Stevenson, who recognized his potential and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. McIlwham graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1967 and went on to complete his Master's degree in 1969. After completing his studies, McIlwham began his career as a concert pianist, performing in various venues across Scotland. He quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent and was invited to perform at several prestigious events. In 1971, he made his debut at the Edinburgh International Festival, where he received critical acclaim for his performance of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 32. McIlwham's career continued to flourish, and he went on to perform at several major events, including the BBC Proms, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Carnegie Hall in New York. He also performed with several renowned orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. One of the highlights of McIlwham's career was his performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1985. The performance was widely praised by critics and established McIlwham as one of the leading pianists of his generation. McIlwham was also a prolific recording artist, and he recorded several albums throughout his career. His recordings of Beethoven's Piano Sonatas and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concertos are considered some of the best interpretations of these works.
