He was born on November 26, 1849, in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, to a family of musicians. His father, Joseph Vézina Sr., was a violinist and conductor, and his mother, Marie-Louise Gagné, was a pianist. Joseph Vézina Jr. showed an early interest in music and began studying the violin and piano at a young age. Vézina's musical education began at the Séminaire de Nicolet, where he studied under the tutelage of Father Joseph-Antoine-Adolphe Chapleau. He then went on to study at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he studied composition with Jules Massenet and conducting with Édouard Colonne. Vézina's time in Paris was a formative period in his musical development, and he was exposed to the latest trends in European music. Upon returning to Canada, Vézina began his career as a conductor, leading orchestras in Montreal, Quebec City, and Trois-Rivières. He was appointed the conductor of the Orchestre Symphonique de Québec in 1902, a position he held until his death in 1924. Vézina was a passionate advocate for classical music in Quebec, and he worked tirelessly to promote the works of Canadian composers. One of Vézina's most significant contributions to Canadian music was his role in the creation of the Société des Concerts de Québec in 1908. This organization was dedicated to promoting classical music in Quebec and provided a platform for Canadian composers to showcase their works. Vézina was the driving force behind the Société des Concerts de Québec, and he served as its conductor until his death. Vézina was also a prolific composer, and he wrote a wide range of works, including operas, symphonies, and chamber music. His compositions were influenced by the Romantic and Impressionist styles of music, and he often incorporated elements of French-Canadian folk music into his works. One of Vézina's most famous works is his opera, Jeanne d'Arc, which premiered in Quebec City in 1894. The opera tells the story of Joan of Arc and features a libretto by Louis Fréchette. Jeanne d'Arc was a critical and commercial success, and it helped establish Vézina as one of Canada's leading composers. Vézina's other notable works include his Symphony in D minor, which premiered in 1904, and his String Quartet in G minor, which was composed in 1912. Both works showcase Vézina's skill as a composer and his ability to blend traditional European styles with Canadian folk music. In addition to his work as a composer and conductor, Vézina was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Conservatoire de musique de Québec and was a mentor to many young Canadian musicians. Vézina's dedication to music education helped to foster a new generation of Canadian composers and performers. Joseph Vézina died on August 19, 1924, in Quebec City, leaving behind a legacy as one of Canada's most important classical composers and conductors. His contributions to the development of classical music in Quebec and Canada cannot be overstated, and his works continue to be performed and celebrated to this day.More....
