Orchestre di Teatro Donizetti is a classical music ensemble based in Bergamo, Italy. The group was founded in 1998 by conductor and pianist Alessandro Calcagnile, with the aim of bringing together talented musicians from the region to perform operatic and symphonic works. The ensemble takes its name from the Teatro Donizetti, a historic opera house in Bergamo where many of its performances have taken place. The theater was named after the famous composer Gaetano Donizetti, who was born in Bergamo in 1797 and went on to become one of the leading figures of the bel canto style of opera. From its early days, the Orchestre di Teatro Donizetti has been dedicated to promoting the music of Donizetti and other Italian composers of the 19th century. The ensemble has also collaborated with contemporary composers and performers, and has premiered several new works in recent years. One of the highlights of the Orchestre di Teatro Donizetti's early years was its performance of Donizetti's opera "Lucia di Lammermoor" in 2001. The production, which was staged at the Teatro Donizetti, received critical acclaim and helped to establish the ensemble as a leading force in the Italian classical music scene. In the years that followed, the Orchestre di Teatro Donizetti continued to build its reputation through a series of high-profile performances and collaborations. In 2004, the ensemble performed at the Festival della Valle d'Itria in Martina Franca, where it received a standing ovation for its rendition of Donizetti's "L'elisir d'amore." The following year, the Orchestre di Teatro Donizetti collaborated with the renowned Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli on a series of concerts in Italy and abroad. The ensemble provided the orchestral accompaniment for Bocelli's performances of arias and popular songs, and received widespread praise for its sensitive and nuanced playing. In 2007, the Orchestre di Teatro Donizetti was invited to perform at the prestigious Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, where it presented a program of works by Donizetti, Verdi, and Rossini. The ensemble's performance was hailed as a triumph, and cemented its reputation as one of the leading classical music ensembles in Italy. In the years that followed, the Orchestre di Teatro Donizetti continued to perform at major venues and festivals throughout Italy and Europe. The ensemble also recorded several albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of Donizetti's "Maria Stuarda" in 2011. In recent years, the Orchestre di Teatro Donizetti has expanded its repertoire to include works by composers from outside Italy, including Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. The ensemble has also continued to collaborate with contemporary composers and performers, and has premiered several new works in recent years. Despite its many achievements, the Orchestre di Teatro Donizetti remains committed to its roots in Bergamo and the music of Donizetti. The ensemble continues to perform regularly at the Teatro Donizetti, and has become an integral part of the cultural life of the city. In recognition of its contributions to the world of classical music, the Orchestre di Teatro Donizetti has received numerous awards and honors over the years. In 2010, the ensemble was awarded the prestigious Premio Abbiati, which is considered one of the highest honors in the Italian classical music world.
