Either Or
Artist Info

Either/Or is a contemporary classical music ensemble that was founded in 2004 by Richard Carrick, a composer and conductor. The ensemble is based in New York City and is dedicated to performing new and experimental music from around the world. The group's name is derived from the philosophical concept of "either/or" as a way of exploring the boundaries between different musical styles and traditions. The ensemble's core members include Richard Carrick (piano), Jennifer Choi (violin), David Shively (percussion), and Margaret Lancaster (flute). Over the years, the group has collaborated with a wide range of composers and performers, including John Zorn, Elliott Sharp, and Christian Wolff. One of the highlights of Either/Or's early career was their performance of Morton Feldman's epic six-hour work "For Philip Guston" in 2005. The piece, which is scored for flute, piano, and percussion, is known for its meditative and introspective qualities, and is considered one of the most important works of the late 20th century. The ensemble's performance was widely praised for its sensitivity and attention to detail, and helped establish Either/Or as a leading interpreter of contemporary music. Since then, the ensemble has continued to push the boundaries of contemporary music, performing works that are often challenging and experimental. In 2010, they premiered Richard Carrick's "Adagios for String Trio," a work that explores the concept of time and duration through a series of slow, meditative movements. The piece was praised for its beauty and emotional depth, and helped establish Carrick as one of the most important composers of his generation. In addition to their performances, Either/Or has also been recognized for their contributions to contemporary music through a number of awards and grants. In 2012, they were awarded a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts to support their performances and educational programs. They have also been recognized by the American Composers Forum and the Fromm Music Foundation for their commitment to new music. Despite their success, Either/Or remains committed to exploring new and experimental music, and to pushing the boundaries of contemporary classical music. They continue to perform regularly in New York City and around the world, and are widely regarded as one of the most important ensembles in contemporary music today.
