Hans Ulrich Lehmann was a Swiss composer and conductor who was born on August 28, 1929, in Zurich, Switzerland. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Lehmann began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and violin with his parents. He later attended the Zurich Conservatory, where he studied composition with Volkmar Andreae and conducting with Paul Sacher. He also studied at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin with Boris Blacher and Ernst Pepping. In 1954, Lehmann was appointed conductor of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, a position he held for 20 years. During his tenure, he established the orchestra as one of the leading chamber orchestras in Europe. He also conducted many other orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Lehmann was a prolific composer, writing over 200 works in a variety of genres, including orchestral, chamber, vocal, and choral music. His music is characterized by its clarity, elegance, and emotional depth. It has been performed by many orchestras around the world and is considered one of the great works of 20th-century classical music. Another notable work by Lehmann is his String Quartet No. 1, which was premiered in 1956 by the Zurich String Quartet.
