David Patterson was born on May 22, 1954, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a jazz pianist and his mother a classical pianist. Patterson began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. He later studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he received a Bachelor of Music degree in composition. After graduating from Juilliard, Patterson began his career as a composer, writing music for various ensembles and orchestras. His early works were heavily influenced by the classical music of the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly the music of Mozart and Beethoven. However, as he continued to compose, Patterson began to develop his own unique style, blending elements of classical music with jazz and other genres. One of Patterson's early works was his Piano Concerto No. 1, which he composed in 1982. The concerto was well-received by critics and established Patterson as a promising young composer. He went on to write several more concertos, including a Violin Concerto and a Cello Concerto. In addition to his concertos, Patterson also wrote a number of chamber music works, including string quartets, sonatas, and trios. One of his most famous chamber works is his String Quartet No. 2, which was premiered in 1990. The quartet is known for its intricate harmonies and complex rhythms, and has been performed by many of the world's leading string quartets. Patterson's music has been performed by many of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has also received numerous awards and honors for his work, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Pulitzer Prize nomination. Throughout his career, Patterson remained committed to exploring new musical ideas and pushing the boundaries of classical music. He was particularly interested in incorporating elements of jazz and other popular music genres into his compositions, and was known for his innovative use of rhythm and harmony. Sadly, David Patterson passed away on October 7, 2016, at the age of 62. However, his legacy as a composer and musician lives on through his many works, which continue to be performed and celebrated by musicians and audiences around the world.
