Orquestra de Cambra Catalana, also known as the Catalan Chamber Orchestra, is a classical music ensemble based in Barcelona, Spain. The orchestra was founded in 1987 by conductor and cellist Jordi Mora, with the aim of promoting Catalan music and culture through chamber music performances. The ensemble consists of around 20 musicians, including string players, wind players, and a harpsichordist. The orchestra's repertoire includes works from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods, as well as contemporary music by Catalan composers. One of the highlights of the orchestra's early years was its participation in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, where it performed at the opening ceremony and various cultural events throughout the games. The orchestra has also performed at major festivals and venues throughout Spain and Europe, including the Palau de la Música Catalana and the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Festival Internacional de Música de Canarias, and the Festival de Música de Santander. In addition to its live performances, the orchestra has recorded several albums, including a series of recordings of Catalan Baroque music for the label La mà de Guido. The orchestra's recording of Antonio Soler's keyboard sonatas was awarded the prestigious Diapason d'Or in 2001. Over the years, the orchestra has collaborated with many renowned soloists and conductors, including violinist Shlomo Mintz, cellist Mischa Maisky, and conductors Neville Marriner and Jordi Savall. The orchestra has also worked with contemporary composers such as Joan Guinjoan and Albert Guinovart, premiering several of their works. In recent years, the orchestra has continued to expand its repertoire and reach, performing works by composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, as well as contemporary Catalan composers such as Xavier Montsalvatge and Joan Albert Amargós. The orchestra has also collaborated with other Catalan cultural institutions, such as the Fundació Joan Miró and the Gran Teatre del Liceu, to present interdisciplinary performances that combine music, art, and theater. Despite its relatively small size, the Orquestra de Cambra Catalana has established itself as one of the leading chamber orchestras in Spain and Europe, known for its high level of musicianship and commitment to promoting Catalan culture and music. With its continued dedication to excellence and innovation, the orchestra is sure to remain a vital part of the classical music scene for years to come.
