Jean-Michel Defaye was born on September 18, 1932, in Saint-Mandé, France. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a trumpet player and his mother a pianist. Defaye began playing the trumpet at a young age and quickly showed promise as a musician. Defaye studied at the Paris Conservatory, where he was a student of André Jolivet and Henri Tomasi. He won several awards during his time at the conservatory, including the Prix de Rome in 1953. This prestigious award allowed him to study in Rome for two years, where he continued to hone his craft. After returning to France, Defaye began his career as a composer and conductor. He quickly gained recognition for his unique style, which blended elements of jazz and classical music. His compositions were often characterized by their complex harmonies and rhythms, as well as their use of unconventional instruments. One of Defaye's most famous works is his trumpet concerto, which he composed in 1954. This piece showcases his virtuosic trumpet playing and his ability to blend jazz and classical styles. The concerto has been performed by many of the world's leading trumpet players and is considered a staple of the trumpet repertoire. Defaye also composed several other works for brass instruments, including a trombone concerto and a horn concerto. These pieces are known for their technical difficulty and their innovative use of brass instruments. In addition to his work as a composer, Defaye was also a respected conductor. He conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestre National de France. He was known for his ability to bring out the best in his musicians and for his attention to detail. Defaye continued to compose and conduct throughout his life, and his music remains popular today. He passed away on January 2, 2019, at the age of 86. His legacy as a composer and musician continues to inspire new generations of musicians.
