Emily Edmonds is a British mezzo-soprano who has established herself as one of the most exciting and versatile singers of her generation. Born in 1987 in the town of Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, Edmonds showed an early interest in music and began singing in choirs at a young age. She went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London, where she received a Bachelor of Music degree in 2009 and a Master of Performance degree in 2011. Edmonds made her professional debut in 2010 as a member of the Glyndebourne Festival Chorus, and quickly began to attract attention for her rich, warm voice and expressive stage presence. She went on to perform with some of the world's leading opera companies, including the Royal Opera House, English National Opera, and Opera North, and has collaborated with many of the most respected conductors and directors in the field. One of Edmonds' most notable early performances was in the role of Cherubino in Mozart's "Le nozze di Figaro" at the Glyndebourne Festival in 2012. Her portrayal of the lovestruck pageboy was praised for its youthful energy and comic timing, and helped to establish her as a rising star in the opera world. She went on to perform the role with several other companies, including the Royal Opera House and Opera North. In 2014, Edmonds made her debut at the prestigious Salzburg Festival in Austria, singing the role of Rosina in Rossini's "Il barbiere di Siviglia." Her performance was widely praised for its agility and charm, and helped to cement her reputation as one of the most promising young singers of her generation. She has since returned to the festival several times, performing in productions of Mozart's "La clemenza di Tito" and "Die Zauberflöte." Edmonds has also made a name for herself as a concert and recital singer, with a repertoire that ranges from Baroque and Classical works to contemporary music. She has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Academy of Ancient Music, and has collaborated with conductors such as Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Sir Simon Rattle, and Daniel Harding. One of Edmonds' most memorable concert performances was in 2016, when she sang the role of Mary Magdalene in a semi-staged production of Bach's "St. Matthew Passion" at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Her performance was praised for its emotional depth and clarity, and helped to establish her as a leading interpreter of Bach's music. Edmonds has also been recognized for her work in contemporary music, and has premiered several new works by composers such as Mark-Anthony Turnage and Thomas Adès. In 2018, she performed in the world premiere of Adès' opera "The Exterminating Angel" at the Royal Opera House, singing the role of Beatriz. Her performance was widely praised for its intensity and dramatic power, and helped to solidify her reputation as a versatile and fearless performer. Throughout her career, Edmonds has received numerous awards and accolades for her singing. In 2014, she was named a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, a prestigious program that supports young musicians in the early stages of their careers.
