Role:EnsemblePeriod:RomanticModernGenre:ChamberConcertoOperaThe Lyon Wind Quintet is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1980 in Lyon, France. The group is composed of five members who play the flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and French horn. The founding members of the group were all graduates of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon, and they shared a passion for chamber music and wind quintet repertoire. The original members of the Lyon Wind Quintet were Jean-Louis Beaumadier (flute), Michel Arrignon (clarinet), Jacques Lancelot (clarinet), Gilbert Audin (bassoon), and André Cazalet (French horn). These musicians were all accomplished soloists and chamber musicians in their own right, and they brought their individual talents and experiences to the ensemble. From the beginning, the Lyon Wind Quintet was committed to exploring the rich and diverse repertoire of wind quintet music. They performed works by both well-known composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, as well as lesser-known composers such as Jean Françaix, Jacques Ibert, and Darius Milhaud. The group also commissioned new works from contemporary composers, including Thierry Escaich, Philippe Hersant, and Bruno Mantovani. One of the highlights of the Lyon Wind Quintet's early career was their performance at the 1982 International Chamber Music Competition in Osaka, Japan. The group won first prize in the wind quintet category, and their performance was praised for its technical precision, musicality, and ensemble cohesion. This award helped to establish the Lyon Wind Quintet as one of the leading wind quintets in the world. Over the years, the Lyon Wind Quintet has continued to perform at major concert halls and festivals around the world. They have appeared at the Berlin Philharmonic, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, the Royal Festival Hall in London, and the Lincoln Center in New York, among many others. They have also been featured at major music festivals such as the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and the Mostly Mozart Festival. In addition to their concert performances, the Lyon Wind Quintet has also recorded extensively. They have released over 20 albums, including recordings of works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, as well as contemporary composers such as Luciano Berio and György Ligeti. Their recordings have received critical acclaim and have won numerous awards, including the Grand Prix du Disque and the Diapason d'Or. The Lyon Wind Quintet has undergone some changes in membership over the years, but the group has remained committed to its original mission of exploring the rich and diverse repertoire of wind quintet music. The current members of the group are Jean-Louis Beaumadier (flute), Michel Moraguès (clarinet), Philippe Bernold (flute), Gilbert Audin (bassoon), and André Cazalet (French horn). These musicians are all accomplished soloists and chamber musicians in their own right, and they bring their individual talents and experiences to the ensemble. In recent years, the Lyon Wind Quintet has continued to perform and record extensively. They have released several new albums, including a recording of works by French composer Francis Poulenc and a recording of works by contemporary composer Thierry Escaich. They have also continued to perform at major concert halls and festivals around the world, including a recent performance at the Wigmore Hall in London.More....
