John Duke was an American composer of classical music, known for his vocal works and songs. He was born on February 26, 1899, in Paragould, Arkansas, to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist and his mother was a pianist, and they both encouraged their son's musical interests from an early age. Duke began studying piano and violin as a child, and later added voice to his repertoire. He attended the University of Arkansas, where he studied music theory and composition. After graduating, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in music. In New York, Duke studied with composer and conductor Ernest Bloch, who encouraged him to focus on vocal music. Duke began composing art songs and vocal works, which quickly gained popularity among singers and audiences. One of Duke's early successes was his song cycle "Songs of Summer," which was premiered in 1930 by soprano Elizabeth Lennox and pianist John Kirkpatrick. The cycle was well-received and helped establish Duke as a composer of vocal music. Throughout his career, Duke composed numerous song cycles and individual songs, many of which were set to poetry by well-known writers such as Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, and William Butler Yeats. His music was known for its lyrical melodies and sensitive treatment of text. In addition to his vocal works, Duke also composed instrumental music, including chamber music and orchestral works. One of his most famous instrumental works is his "Homage to Boston," a suite for orchestra that was commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1952. Duke was also a respected teacher of music composition, and taught at several universities throughout his career. He was a faculty member at the Eastman School of Music from 1946 to 1967, and later taught at the University of Texas at Austin. Duke's music has been performed and recorded by numerous singers and ensembles, and continues to be popular among vocalists and audiences today. He died on October 7, 1984, in Austin, Texas, at the age of 85.
