Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares is a Bulgarian female choir that has gained worldwide recognition for their unique and hauntingly beautiful performances of traditional Bulgarian folk music. The group was formed in 1952 by Bulgarian composer and ethnomusicologist Philip Koutev, who sought to preserve and promote the rich musical heritage of his country. Koutev assembled a group of talented singers from various regions of Bulgaria, each with their own distinct vocal style and repertoire. The group quickly gained popularity in Bulgaria and began touring internationally, performing at festivals and concerts throughout Europe and the United States. In 1986, the group caught the attention of Swiss ethnomusicologist Marcel Cellier, who was struck by the beauty and power of their music. Cellier invited the group to record an album for his label, Disques Cellier, which was released under the title Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares (The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices). The album was an instant success, receiving critical acclaim and winning a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Recording in 1989. The group's unique sound, characterized by intricate harmonies, complex rhythms, and haunting melodies, captivated audiences around the world and helped to popularize Bulgarian folk music on the international stage. Over the years, Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares has continued to perform and record, releasing several more albums and collaborating with a variety of artists and musicians. They have performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Sydney Opera House in Australia. In addition to their Grammy Award, the group has received numerous other accolades and honors, including the Order of Stara Planina, one of Bulgaria's highest civilian honors, and the UNESCO Prize for the Promotion of the Arts.
