Matthew Strachan is a British composer, pianist, and songwriter who has made a name for himself in the world of classical music. Born on October 11, 1970, in London, England, Strachan grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Jack Strachan, was a composer and conductor, while his mother, Maggie Strachan, was a singer and pianist. From a young age, Strachan was exposed to a wide variety of musical genres, including classical, jazz, and pop. Strachan began playing the piano at the age of five and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London, where he honed his skills as a pianist and composer. During his time at the Royal College of Music, Strachan was awarded several prestigious prizes, including the Theodore Holland Award for Composition and the John Longmire Prize for Piano. After graduating from the Royal College of Music, Strachan began his career as a composer and pianist. He quickly gained a reputation for his innovative and eclectic style, which blended elements of classical, jazz, and pop music. Strachan's early works included a number of solo piano pieces, as well as chamber music and orchestral compositions. One of Strachan's early successes was his composition "Sixteen Songs for Sixteen Strings," which was commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra. The piece, which was premiered in 1996, featured a string orchestra and showcased Strachan's ability to write complex and intricate melodies. The piece was well-received by critics and helped to establish Strachan as a rising star in the world of classical music. In the years that followed, Strachan continued to compose a wide variety of works, including operas, ballets, and film scores. One of his most notable works during this period was his opera "The Voice," which was premiered in 2001. The opera, which was based on the life of the legendary singer Maria Callas, featured a libretto by the renowned playwright Christopher Hampton. The opera was a critical and commercial success, and helped to cement Strachan's reputation as one of the most talented composers of his generation. In addition to his work as a composer, Strachan has also had a successful career as a songwriter. He has written songs for a number of popular artists, including Kylie Minogue, Boyzone, and Steps. One of his most famous songs is the theme tune for the popular game show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" The song, which was composed in 1998, has become one of the most recognizable pieces of music in the world, and has been used in countless television shows and films. Despite his success as a songwriter, Strachan has always remained true to his roots as a classical composer. He continues to write and perform classical music, and has collaborated with a number of leading orchestras and ensembles around the world. Some of his most recent works include a concerto for piano and orchestra, which was premiered in 2018, and a ballet score for the Royal Ballet in London. Throughout his career, Strachan has received numerous awards and accolades for his work as a composer and pianist. He has been nominated for several Ivor Novello Awards, and has won the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors Award for Best Television Soundtrack.
