Period:ModernGenre:ChoralSverre Riise was a Norwegian classical pianist who was born on August 22, 1919, in Oslo, Norway. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. His father, Sigurd Riise, was a well-known pianist and composer, and his mother, Ingeborg Riise, was a singer. Sverre Riise showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Riise received his first formal piano lessons from his father and later studied with several prominent Norwegian pianists, including Einar Steen-Nøkleberg and Robert Riefling. He also studied composition with Bjarne Brustad and conducting with Øivin Fjeldstad. Riise made his debut as a pianist in 1937, at the age of 18, performing Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. He quickly gained a reputation as one of Norway's most promising young pianists and went on to perform extensively throughout Europe and the United States. In 1948, Riise won first prize in the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, Belgium, which launched his international career. He went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. Riise was known for his interpretations of the works of Norwegian composers, particularly Edvard Grieg. He recorded several albums of Grieg's music, including the complete piano works, which are still considered definitive recordings today. In addition to his career as a pianist, Riise was also a respected conductor. He served as the principal conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra from 1962 to 1965 and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra from 1965 to 1970. He also conducted many other orchestras throughout Europe and the United States. Riise was a prolific recording artist, with over 50 albums to his name. He recorded works by a wide range of composers, including Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, and Schumann. His recordings were praised for their technical brilliance and musical sensitivity. Throughout his career, Riise received many honors and awards. In addition to his victory at the Queen Elisabeth Competition, he was awarded the Order of St. Olav, Norway's highest civilian honor, in 1965. He was also made a Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog by the Danish government in 1970. Riise continued to perform and record well into his later years. He gave his final concert in 1994, at the age of 75, and passed away on December 12, 1999, at the age of 80. Sverre Riise was a true master of the piano, known for his technical brilliance, musical sensitivity, and deep understanding of the works of Norwegian composers.
