Susanna Laurin is a Swedish classical music artist who has made a name for herself as a composer, conductor, and flutist. Born in Stockholm in 1971, Laurin grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to classical music from a young age. Her mother was a pianist and her father was a composer, and they encouraged her to pursue music as a career. Laurin began playing the flute at the age of six and quickly showed a talent for the instrument. She studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and later at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland. During her studies, she also took courses in composition and conducting, which would later become important parts of her career. After completing her education, Laurin began performing as a flutist with various orchestras and ensembles in Sweden and Finland. She also started composing her own music, which was often inspired by nature and the Scandinavian landscape. Her compositions were well-received and she began to gain recognition as a composer. In 2001, Laurin founded the contemporary music ensemble Curious Chamber Players, which she still conducts today. The ensemble is known for its innovative and experimental approach to classical music, and has performed at major festivals and venues throughout Europe. Laurin's career as a composer and conductor continued to flourish, and she began to receive commissions from major orchestras and ensembles. In 2010, she was awarded the prestigious Christ Johnson Prize for her contributions to contemporary music in Sweden. One of Laurin's most notable compositions is her flute concerto "The Wind Rose," which was premiered by the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2014. The piece was inspired by the wind patterns of the Baltic Sea and features intricate flute solos and atmospheric orchestration. Laurin has also been recognized for her work as a conductor, and has led performances with orchestras such as the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra. In 2018, she was appointed as the principal conductor of the Swedish Wind Ensemble, becoming the first woman to hold the position. In addition to her work as a composer and conductor, Laurin is also a passionate advocate for gender equality in classical music. She has spoken out about the lack of representation of women in the field and has worked to promote the work of female composers and conductors. Overall, Susanna Laurin has established herself as a leading figure in contemporary classical music. Her innovative compositions and dynamic conducting have earned her numerous accolades and a dedicated following of fans and fellow musicians. As she continues to push the boundaries of classical music, it is clear that Laurin's influence will be felt for years to come.
