Glynis Johns was a British actress and singer who was born on October 5, 1923, in Pretoria, South Africa. Her parents were Mervyn Johns, a Welsh actor, and Alys Steele, a concert pianist. Glynis grew up in Wales and was educated at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Glynis began her career as a child actress, appearing in several British films in the 1930s and 1940s. She made her stage debut in 1942 in the play "The Children's Hour" and went on to appear in several West End productions. In 1948, she made her Broadway debut in the play "The Circle" and received critical acclaim for her performance. In addition to her acting career, Glynis was also a talented singer. She made her singing debut in 1952 in the musical "Two's Company" and went on to appear in several other musicals, including "A Time for Singing" and "The Merry Widow." She also recorded several albums, including "Glynis Johns Sings" and "Glynis Johns in Hollywood." One of Glynis's most memorable performances was in the 1964 film "Mary Poppins," in which she played the role of Mrs. Banks, the mother of the two children who are looked after by Mary Poppins. Glynis's performance of the song "Sister Suffragette" in the film was particularly memorable and earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Glynis continued to work in film, television, and theater throughout the 1970s and 1980s. She received critical acclaim for her performance in the 1973 film "The Triple Echo" and won a Tony Award in 1973 for her performance in the Broadway play "A Little Night Music."
