The orchestra was established by the German composer and conductor, Willy Mattes, who served as its first music director. The ensemble was initially formed as a studio orchestra for the recording of film scores and other commercial music, but it soon gained a reputation for its high-quality performances of classical repertoire. Over the years, Stuttgart Ton-Studio Orchestra has featured many talented musicians, including some of the most renowned instrumentalists and conductors in the world. Some of the orchestra's most notable members have included the violinist Wolfgang Marschner, the cellist Julius Berger, and the conductor Neville Marriner. One of the highlights of Stuttgart Ton-Studio Orchestra's early career was its collaboration with the German composer and conductor, Hans Werner Henze. In the 1950s and 1960s, the orchestra performed many of Henze's works, including his opera "Boulevard Solitude" and his ballet "Ondine". One of the most memorable performances in the orchestra's history took place in 1987, when it performed Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Herbert von Karajan. This performance was widely acclaimed and helped to cement Stuttgart Ton-Studio Orchestra's reputation as one of the finest orchestras in Europe. Over the years, Stuttgart Ton-Studio Orchestra has received many awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 1978, the orchestra won a Grammy Award for its recording of Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik". The orchestra has also been awarded the German Record Critics' Award and the Echo Klassik Award for its recordings of works by Bach, Beethoven, and other composers. Today, Stuttgart Ton-Studio Orchestra continues to perform and record classical music under the direction of its current music director, Matthias Foremny. The orchestra's repertoire includes works by both classical and contemporary composers, and it continues to collaborate with some of the most talented soloists and conductors in the world.
