Artist Info

Emil Chakalov was a renowned classical music artist who was born on December 22, 1958, in Sofia, Bulgaria. He was a violinist who was known for his exceptional talent and virtuosity. Chakalov began playing the violin at the age of six and quickly showed a natural aptitude for the instrument. He was enrolled in the National School of Music in Sofia, where he received his formal training in classical music. Chakalov's talent was recognized early on, and he was awarded numerous prizes and accolades throughout his career. In 1975, he won first prize at the National Competition for Young Musicians in Bulgaria. This was followed by a series of international awards, including first prize at the International Competition in Vercelli, Italy, in 1978, and the Grand Prix at the International Competition in Montreal, Canada, in 1980. Chakalov's talent and dedication to his craft led him to study with some of the most renowned violinists of his time. He studied with Yfrah Neaman at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, and with Dorothy DeLay at the Juilliard School in New York. He also worked with Isaac Stern, Pinchas Zukerman, and Itzhak Perlman, among others. Chakalov's career as a soloist began in the early 1980s, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented and exciting violinists of his generation. He performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. One of Chakalov's most memorable performances was his debut at Carnegie Hall in New York in 1985. He performed the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the New York Chamber Symphony, and his performance was met with critical acclaim. The New York Times praised his "brilliant technique and passionate playing," and he was hailed as a rising star in the classical music world. Chakalov's repertoire was vast and varied, and he was known for his interpretations of both classical and contemporary works. He was particularly interested in the music of his native Bulgaria, and he often incorporated Bulgarian folk melodies into his performances. He also worked with contemporary composers, including Krzysztof Penderecki and Sofia Gubaidulina, and premiered several new works during his career. In addition to his career as a soloist, Chakalov was also a dedicated teacher and mentor. He taught at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg, Germany, and the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria. He was known for his generosity and kindness, and his students remember him as a passionate and inspiring teacher. Tragically, Chakalov's career was cut short when he passed away in 1991 at the age of 32. He had been scheduled to perform at the Royal Festival Hall in London just days after his death. His passing was a great loss to the classical music world, and he is remembered as one of the most talented and promising violinists of his generation. In honor of Chakalov's legacy, several awards and scholarships have been established in his name. The Emil Chakalov Memorial Fund was established in 1992 to support young musicians in Bulgaria, and the Emil Chakalov International Violin Competition was established in 2008 to honor his memory and promote the development of young violinists.
