She was the daughter of a Danish father and a German mother, and her family moved to Germany when she was a child. Petri showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. She later studied at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin and the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen. Petri's talent as a pianist was recognized early on, and she won several awards and competitions throughout her career. In 1949, she won first prize at the International Steinway Competition in Hamburg, and in 1952, she won the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels. These early successes helped to establish Petri as a rising star in the classical music world. Petri's career as a concert pianist took her all over the world, and she performed with many of the leading orchestras and conductors of her time. She made her debut in the United States in 1953, playing with the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Dimitri Mitropoulos. She also performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Philadelphia Orchestra, among others. One of Petri's most memorable performances was her 1958 debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City. She played a program of works by Bach, Beethoven, and Chopin, and the audience was captivated by her virtuosity and musicality. The New York Times praised her performance, saying that "her playing was marked by a rare combination of technical brilliance and interpretive insight." Petri was also known for her recordings, which included works by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, and many other composers. Her recordings were highly regarded by critics and audiences alike, and she won several awards for her work in the recording studio. In 1961, she won a Grammy Award for Best Classical Performance - Instrumental Soloist or Soloists (with or without orchestra) for her recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations. Throughout her career, Petri was committed to promoting classical music and supporting young musicians. She taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Music for many years, and she also served as a juror for several international music competitions. She was a passionate advocate for the importance of music education, and she believed that classical music had the power to enrich people's lives and bring them together. Petri continued to perform and record well into her later years, and she remained an active and influential figure in the classical music world until her death in 2013 at the age of 85.
