He was the son of a musician and grew up in a family that was deeply involved in music. His father, Francisco Barrera, was a renowned composer and conductor, and his mother, Josefa Calleja, was a singer. Barrera showed an early interest in music and began studying piano and composition at a young age. He was a prodigious talent and quickly gained a reputation as a skilled musician. In 1872, at the age of 17, he moved to Madrid to further his studies and pursue a career in music. In Madrid, Barrera studied under the tutelage of the renowned composer Emilio Arrieta. He quickly established himself as a talented composer and began to gain recognition for his work. In 1876, he won first prize in a national competition for his composition "La Venganza de Don Mendo," which was a zarzuela, a type of Spanish operetta. Barrera continued to compose zarzuelas throughout his career and became one of the most prominent composers of the genre. His works were known for their catchy melodies, lively rhythms, and witty lyrics. Some of his most famous zarzuelas include "La Gran Vía," "El Barberillo de Lavapiés," and "La Revoltosa." In addition to his work in zarzuela, Barrera also composed orchestral music, chamber music, and choral works. His compositions were influenced by the music of his native Andalusia, as well as by the classical music of Europe. He was known for his use of Spanish folk melodies and rhythms in his compositions, which gave his music a distinctive flavor. Barrera's music was well-received during his lifetime, and he was honored with numerous awards and accolades. In 1901, he was awarded the Cross of Alfonso XII, one of Spain's highest honors, for his contributions to music. He was also a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and the Royal Academy of History. Barrera continued to compose music until his death on December 31, 1908, in Madrid.
