From a young age, Joan showed a natural talent for music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. Joan began his musical education at the age of six, studying piano and music theory with his father. He quickly showed a talent for composition, and by the age of ten, he had written his first piece of music. He continued his studies at the Conservatorio de Santiago de Compostela, where he studied composition with the renowned composer and conductor, Antón García Abril. After completing his studies at the Conservatorio, Joan moved to Madrid to continue his education at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid. There, he studied composition with Francisco Guerrero and orchestration with Luis de Pablo. He also studied conducting with Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos and Enrique García Asensio. Joan's early works were heavily influenced by the music of his native Galicia, with its rich tradition of folk music. He incorporated elements of Galician music into his compositions, creating a unique sound that was both modern and rooted in tradition. His early works include "Suite Gallega" for orchestra, "Cantigas de Amigo" for choir, and "Sonata para Piano" No. 1. In the 1980s, Joan's music began to gain recognition outside of Spain. His works were performed at festivals and concerts throughout Europe and the United States. In 1985, he was awarded the National Prize for Music by the Spanish Ministry of Culture, which brought him even more attention and acclaim. One of Joan's most significant works is his opera, "La Casa de Bernarda Alba," based on the play by Federico García Lorca. The opera premiered in 1998 and was an instant success, receiving critical acclaim and numerous performances throughout Spain and Europe.
