Bart Howard was an American composer and songwriter who is best known for his popular song "Fly Me to the Moon." Born Howard Joseph Gustafson on June 1, 1915, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the youngest of three children. His parents were both musicians, and his father played the piano and organ in local churches. Howard showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. As a child, Howard's family moved frequently, and he attended several different schools. Despite this, he continued to study music and eventually attended the Chicago Musical College. After graduating, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in music. In the 1940s, Howard began performing in nightclubs and cabarets in New York City. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented songwriter and performer, and his songs were recorded by several popular singers of the time, including Dinah Shore and Perry Como. One of Howard's most famous songs, "Fly Me to the Moon," was written in 1954. Originally titled "In Other Words," the song was first recorded by Kaye Ballard. However, it was Frank Sinatra's 1964 recording that made the song a hit and cemented its place in popular culture. "Fly Me to the Moon" has since been recorded by countless artists and has been featured in numerous films and television shows. In addition to "Fly Me to the Moon," Howard wrote several other popular songs, including "Let Me Love You," "Don't Dream of Anybody But Me," and "Walkin' My Baby Back Home." He also composed music for several Broadway shows, including "Shangri-La" and "Here's Love." Despite his success as a songwriter, Howard remained relatively unknown to the general public. He was known primarily within the music industry and among other musicians. However, his contributions to the world of music were significant, and his songs continue to be beloved by audiences around the world. Howard died on February 21, 2004, at the age of 88. His legacy as a composer and songwriter lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and enjoyed by audiences of all ages.
