Role:ComposerChristos Sp. Anastassiou was a Greek composer born on December 25, 1959, in Athens, Greece. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a pianist and his mother a singer. From a young age, Anastassiou showed a keen interest in music and began studying the piano at the age of six. Anastassiou's musical education began at the National Conservatory of Athens, where he studied piano, music theory, and harmony. He later went on to study composition at the Athens Conservatory with the renowned Greek composer, Yannis Ioannidis. During his studies, Anastassiou was awarded several scholarships, including the Onassis Foundation Scholarship, which allowed him to continue his studies in Paris. In Paris, Anastassiou studied composition with the French composer, Michel Philippot, and attended masterclasses with the likes of Olivier Messiaen and Iannis Xenakis. He also studied electroacoustic music at the Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRM) and the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM). Anastassiou's early works were heavily influenced by the avant-garde and experimental music of the 20th century. His compositions often featured complex rhythms, unconventional harmonies, and extended techniques for traditional instruments. Some of his early works include "Epitaphios" for string quartet and "Athanatos" for piano and tape. In the 1990s, Anastassiou's style began to shift towards a more tonal and lyrical approach. His compositions became more accessible to audiences while still retaining his unique voice. Some of his works from this period include "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra" and "Symphony No. 1." Anastassiou's music has been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, including the Athens State Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, and the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble. He has also collaborated with several renowned soloists, including pianist Dimitris Sgouros and violinist Leonidas Kavakos. One of Anastassiou's most significant works is his opera, "The Murderess," based on the novel by Alexandros Papadiamantis. The opera premiered in Athens in 2009 and was later performed in New York City in 2011. The opera tells the story of a woman who murders her husband and son and is sentenced to death. The music is a blend of traditional Greek music and contemporary classical music, with elements of opera, choral music, and spoken word. Anastassiou has also composed several works for film and television, including the score for the Greek film "The Last Note" and the theme music for the Greek television series "The Island." In addition to his work as a composer, Anastassiou has also been active as a music educator. He has taught composition and music theory at several institutions, including the Athens Conservatory and the Ionian University in Corfu. Anastassiou's music has been recognized with several awards and honors, including the Dimitris Mitropoulos Prize for Composition and the Greek National Radio and Television Prize for Best Soundtrack. He is a member of the Greek Composers' Union and the International Society for Contemporary Music. Christos Sp.
