Laércio de Freitas was a Brazilian pianist, composer, and arranger who was born on August 17, 1945, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He was born into a family of musicians, and his father, a saxophonist, was his first music teacher. Laércio began playing the piano at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for music. He studied classical music at the Brazilian Conservatory of Music in Rio de Janeiro and later at the Vienna Academy of Music in Austria. Laércio's musical career began in the 1960s when he joined the Brazilian music scene as a pianist and arranger. He worked with some of the most prominent Brazilian musicians of the time, including Elis Regina, João Gilberto, and Tom Jobim. He also played with the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra and the Rio de Janeiro Symphony Orchestra. In the 1970s, Laércio began composing his own music, drawing inspiration from Brazilian rhythms and classical music. His compositions were characterized by their intricate harmonies and rhythms, and he often incorporated elements of jazz and bossa nova into his music. He released his first album, "Laércio de Freitas," in 1977, which was well-received by critics and audiences alike. Throughout his career, Laércio composed music for film, television, and theater. He also collaborated with other musicians, including the Brazilian guitarist Baden Powell and the American saxophonist Stan Getz. In 1985, he released his second album, "Circuito Musical," which featured his own compositions as well as arrangements of Brazilian classics. One of Laércio's most significant works was his composition "Concerto para Piano e Orquestra," which he composed in 1990. The concerto was commissioned by the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra and premiered in Rio de Janeiro in 1991. The piece was well-received by critics and audiences and showcased Laércio's unique blend of classical and Brazilian music. In addition to his work as a composer and pianist, Laércio was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Brazilian Conservatory of Music and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, where he mentored many young musicians who went on to have successful careers in music. Laércio continued to compose and perform music until his death on May 26, 2021, at the age of 75. He left behind a legacy of innovative and influential music that blended classical and Brazilian music in a unique and compelling way. His contributions to Brazilian music and culture will be remembered for generations to come.
