Finn Høffding was a Danish composer who was born on September 22, 1899, in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was the son of a prominent Danish philosopher, Harald Høffding, who was a professor at the University of Copenhagen. Finn Høffding grew up in a family that valued education and intellectual pursuits, and he was encouraged to pursue his interests in music from a young age. Høffding began his musical studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he studied composition with Knud Jeppesen and piano with Victor Schiøler. He also studied musicology at the University of Copenhagen, where he earned a doctorate in 1926 with a thesis on the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Høffding's early compositions were influenced by the music of Bach and other Baroque composers, as well as by the music of the French Impressionists. He was also interested in the music of his contemporaries, including Arnold Schoenberg and Igor Stravinsky, and he incorporated elements of their styles into his own compositions. Høffding's first major work was his Symphony No. 1, which he composed in 1927. The symphony was well-received by critics and established Høffding as a promising young composer. He continued to compose symphonies throughout his career, including Symphony No. 2 (1931), Symphony No. 3 (1935), and Symphony No. 4 (1947). In addition to his symphonies, Høffding composed a wide variety of other works, including chamber music, choral music, and operas. One of his most famous works is his opera, "The Enchanted Island," which premiered in 1939. The opera is based on a play by William Shakespeare and tells the story of a group of shipwrecked sailors who find themselves on a magical island. Høffding's music is characterized by its lyricism, its use of rich harmonies, and its incorporation of elements from a variety of musical styles. He was particularly interested in the music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, and he often incorporated elements of these styles into his own compositions. Høffding was also a respected musicologist and wrote extensively on the music of Bach and other composers. His writings on Bach were particularly influential, and he was one of the first scholars to argue that Bach's music should be performed on period instruments. Høffding continued to compose and write about music throughout his life, and he remained an important figure in Danish music until his death in 1997 at the age of 97. His music continues to be performed and recorded today, and he is remembered as one of Denmark's most important composers.
