Artist Info
Johannes Rostamo was a renowned classical music artist who was born on May 12, 1975, in Helsinki, Finland. He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a pianist, and his mother was a violinist. From a young age, Johannes showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Johannes received his early music education at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and pedagogue Liisa Pohjola. He later went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in piano performance. Throughout his career, Johannes was known for his exceptional technical skills and his ability to convey deep emotion through his music. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt. One of the highlights of Johannes' career was his performance at the 2002 International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland. He was awarded second prize in the competition, which is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious piano competitions in the world. His performance of Chopin's Sonata No. 3 in B minor was particularly praised by the judges and the audience. Johannes also performed extensively as a soloist with orchestras around the world. He made his debut with the New York Philharmonic in 2005, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, "Emperor." He also performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, among others. In addition to his solo performances, Johannes was also a dedicated chamber musician. He frequently collaborated with other musicians, including violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Together, they performed works by composers such as Brahms, Schumann, and Shostakovich. Johannes was the recipient of numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In addition to his success at the International Chopin Piano Competition, he was also awarded first prize at the 1998 International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna, Austria. He was also a recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is awarded to outstanding young musicians in the United States. Tragically, Johannes' career was cut short when he passed away suddenly in 2010 at the age of 35. His death was a shock to the classical music world, and he was mourned by fans and colleagues around the globe. Despite his untimely passing, Johannes' legacy lives on through his recordings and the memories of those who were fortunate enough to hear him perform. He was a true master of his craft, and his contributions to the world of classical music will be remembered for generations to come.More....
