Egidius Consort is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over two decades. The group was founded in 1995 by the Dutch conductor and countertenor Peter de Groot, who remains the artistic director of the ensemble to this day. The name "Egidius" is derived from the Latin name "Aegidius," which means "shield-bearer" or "protector." This name was chosen to reflect the group's commitment to preserving and promoting the rich heritage of classical music. The Egidius Consort is known for their unique sound, which is characterized by the use of period instruments and a focus on historically informed performance practices. The ensemble's repertoire spans a wide range of musical styles and periods, from medieval chant to contemporary works. Over the years, the Egidius Consort has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Festival Oude Muziek in Utrecht, and the Early Music Festival in Bruges. They have also collaborated with many renowned soloists and ensembles, such as the Huelgas Ensemble and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra. One of the highlights of the Egidius Consort's career was their performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion at the Concertgebouw in 2005.
