Percussive Rotterdam is a classical music ensemble that specializes in percussion instruments. The group was founded in 2008 by a group of percussionists who were studying at the Rotterdam Conservatory in the Netherlands. The founding members of the group were Jeroen Geevers, Niels Meliefste, Ramon Lormans, and Dominique Vleeshouwers. The group's main focus is on contemporary classical music, and they have commissioned and premiered many new works by composers from around the world. They have also performed works by established composers such as Steve Reich, John Cage, and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Percussive Rotterdam has performed at many prestigious venues and festivals around the world, including the Holland Festival, the Gaudeamus Muziekweek, and the Percussive Arts Society International Convention. They have also collaborated with many other musicians and ensembles, including the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble. One of the highlights of Percussive Rotterdam's career was their performance at the 2012 World Music Days festival in Belgium. They performed a new work by Dutch composer Mayke Nas, which was commissioned by the festival. The performance was well-received by both the audience and the critics, and it helped to establish the group as one of the leading percussion ensembles in Europe. Another notable performance by Percussive Rotterdam was their collaboration with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in 2014. They performed the world premiere of a new work by Dutch composer Joey Roukens, which was written specifically for the two ensembles. The performance was a huge success, and it led to many more collaborations between the two groups. Percussive Rotterdam has also won many awards and accolades for their performances and recordings. In 2010, they won the Dutch Classical Talent Award, which is given to the most promising young classical musicians in the Netherlands. The current members of Percussive Rotterdam are Dominique Vleeshouwers, Ramon Lormans, and Frank Wienk. Vleeshouwers is the group's artistic director and principal percussionist. He has won many awards for his solo performances, including the Tromp Percussion Competition and the Princess Christina Competition. Lormans is also a highly acclaimed percussionist, and he has performed with many other ensembles, including the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the Dutch National Opera. Wienk is a multi-instrumentalist who specializes in electronic percussion, and he has performed with many other musicians and ensembles in addition to Percussive Rotterdam. In addition to their performances and recordings, Percussive Rotterdam is also committed to education and outreach. They regularly give workshops and masterclasses for young percussionists, and they have developed a program called "Percussion Friends" that introduces children to the world of percussion music.
