He is best known for composing the music for the Belgian national anthem, "La Brabançonne," which was adopted in 1830. Van Campenhout was born in Brussels in 1779. His father was a musician, and he began his musical education at a young age. He studied violin and composition with his father, as well as with other prominent musicians in Brussels. In 1804, Van Campenhout was appointed as the conductor of the orchestra at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. He held this position for over 20 years, during which time he composed numerous operas, ballets, and other works for the theater. One of Van Campenhout's most famous works is his opera "De Schipbreuk" (The Shipwreck), which premiered in 1819. The opera tells the story of a group of sailors who are shipwrecked on a deserted island. It was well-received by audiences and helped to establish Van Campenhout as a prominent composer in Belgium. In addition to his work at the Théâtre de la Monnaie, Van Campenhout also composed music for other theaters in Brussels and throughout Belgium. He was particularly interested in promoting Belgian music and musicians, and he often included traditional Belgian folk songs and dances in his compositions. Van Campenhout's most famous work, "La Brabançonne," was composed in 1830, during the Belgian Revolution. The song was originally written as a patriotic song for the Brussels Opera, but it quickly became associated with the revolution and was adopted as the national anthem of Belgium in 1831. "La Brabançonne" is a stirring and patriotic song that celebrates the history and culture of Belgium. It has become an important symbol of Belgian identity and is played at official events and ceremonies throughout the country. Van Campenhout continued to compose music throughout his life, and he remained an important figure in the Belgian music scene until his death in 1848. His legacy as a composer and musician continues to be celebrated in Belgium and around the world.More....
