Amparo Iturbi was a renowned classical music artist who made a significant contribution to the world of music. Born on September 24, 1898, in Valencia, Spain, Amparo was the younger sister of the famous pianist and conductor, José Iturbi. From a young age, Amparo showed a keen interest in music and began her training in piano and voice under the guidance of her brother. Amparo's talent was evident from an early age, and she quickly gained recognition for her exceptional musical abilities. She made her debut as a pianist at the age of 12, performing in Valencia's Teatro Principal. Her performance was well-received, and she soon began to receive invitations to perform in other cities across Spain. In 1915, Amparo and her brother José moved to Paris to further their musical education. There, Amparo studied under the renowned pianist and pedagogue, Isidor Philipp. She also received vocal training from the famous soprano, Emma Calvé. During her time in Paris, Amparo performed in several concerts and recitals, gaining a reputation as a talented and versatile musician. In 1920, Amparo and José moved to the United States, where they continued to perform and teach music. Amparo made her American debut as a pianist in 1921, performing with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Walter Damrosch. Her performance was a resounding success, and she soon became a sought-after performer in the United States. Throughout her career, Amparo performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. She also performed in many prestigious venues, such as Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. Amparo was known for her exceptional musicality and technical proficiency, particularly in the works of Spanish composers such as Manuel de Falla and Isaac Albéniz. She was also a gifted accompanist and frequently performed with her brother José, who was a renowned pianist and conductor in his own right. In addition to her performing career, Amparo was also a respected teacher of music. She taught at the University of Southern California and the University of Miami, where she was a professor of piano and voice. Many of her students went on to have successful careers in music, and she was highly regarded for her dedication and expertise as a teacher. Amparo received many honors and awards throughout her career, including the Order of Isabella the Catholic, which was awarded to her by the Spanish government in recognition of her contributions to Spanish culture. She was also awarded the Key to the City of Los Angeles and was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Amparo Iturbi passed away on August 28, 1969, at the age of 70. Her legacy as a musician and teacher continues to inspire generations of musicians, and her contributions to the world of classical music will always be remembered.
