Ensemble Galina is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2012 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for chamber music. The ensemble is named after Galina Ustvolskaya, a Russian composer who was known for her uncompromising and intense music. The founding members of Ensemble Galina were violinist Sarah Plum, cellist Craig Hultgren, and pianist/composer Aron Kallay. They were later joined by clarinetist Brian Walsh and percussionist Yuri Inoo. The ensemble is based in Los Angeles, California, and has performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Ensemble Galina is known for its innovative programming, which often includes works by contemporary composers alongside more traditional repertoire. The ensemble has commissioned and premiered numerous new works, including pieces by composers such as Vera Ivanova, Isaac Schankler, and Nicholas Deyoe. One of the highlights of Ensemble Galina's career was their performance at the 2014 Ojai Music Festival, where they presented a program of works by Ustvolskaya, John Cage, and Morton Feldman. The ensemble's performance was praised by critics for its intensity and precision. Ensemble Galina has also been recognized for its recordings. Their debut album, "Ustvolskaya: Trio, Sonata, Duet," was released in 2014 and received critical acclaim. The album features Ustvolskaya's Trio for Violin, Clarinet, and Piano, Sonata for Violin and Piano, and Duet for Violin and Piano. In addition to their performances and recordings, Ensemble Galina is committed to education and outreach. The ensemble has presented workshops and masterclasses at universities and music schools throughout the United States, and has worked with young composers to develop new works. Ensemble Galina has received numerous awards and honors for their work. In 2015, they were awarded a grant from the Aaron Copland Fund for Music to support their recording of works by Ustvolskaya. They were also named a finalist for the 2016 American Prize in Chamber Music Performance.
