The Raleigh Ringers is a classical music group that specializes in handbell performances. The group was founded in 1990 by David M. Harris, who was inspired by a handbell choir he saw perform in England. Harris wanted to bring the same level of excellence to the United States, and he began recruiting musicians to form the Raleigh Ringers. The group started with just 12 members, but it quickly grew in popularity. The Raleigh Ringers began performing at local events and churches, and their reputation for excellence spread. In 1994, the group released their first CD, "Ringing in the Holidays," which featured traditional Christmas carols and hymns. Over the years, the Raleigh Ringers have performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the United States, including Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. They have also performed internationally, including in Canada, England, and France. One of the highlights of the Raleigh Ringers' career was their performance at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. The group was selected to perform at the Olympic Medals Plaza, where they played a variety of classical and contemporary pieces to a crowd of thousands. The Raleigh Ringers have also won numerous awards and accolades for their performances. In 2009, they won the International Handbell Symposium's Composition Contest for their piece "The Awakening." They have also won multiple awards from the Handbell Musicians of America, including the Area 3 Championship in 2010 and 2012. In addition to their performances, the Raleigh Ringers are also dedicated to educating and inspiring the next generation of handbell musicians. They offer workshops and clinics for handbell choirs and individual musicians, and they have published several instructional books and DVDs.
