The Throat Singers of Tuva are a group of musicians who specialize in the traditional art of throat singing, also known as overtone singing. The group hails from the Republic of Tuva, a region in southern Siberia, Russia, where throat singing has been practiced for centuries. The origins of throat singing in Tuva are shrouded in mystery, but it is believed to have developed as a way for nomadic herders to communicate with each other across long distances. Throat singing involves producing multiple pitches simultaneously by manipulating the vocal cords, tongue, and lips in a unique way. The resulting sound is often described as otherworldly or ethereal. The Throat Singers of Tuva were formed in the 1980s by a group of young musicians who were inspired by the traditional music of their homeland. The group quickly gained a following in Tuva and began to perform at local festivals and events. In 1987, the Throat Singers of Tuva gained international recognition when they were invited to perform at the Festival of World Cultures in France. The group's performance was a sensation, and they were invited to perform at other festivals and events around the world. Over the years, the Throat Singers of Tuva have performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Royal Albert Hall in London. They have also collaborated with a number of Western musicians, including the Kronos Quartet and the Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart. In addition to their live performances, the Throat Singers of Tuva have released several albums, including "Tuva: Voices from the Center of Asia" and "Echoes of Tuva." Their music has been featured in films and television shows, including the documentary "Genghis Blues," which won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2000. The Throat Singers of Tuva have received numerous awards and honors for their contributions to music and culture. In 1993, they were awarded the UNESCO International Music Prize, and in 2010, they were awarded the Order of Friendship by the Russian government. Despite their international success, the Throat Singers of Tuva remain committed to preserving and promoting the traditional music of their homeland. They continue to perform and teach throat singing in Tuva and around the world, ensuring that this unique art form will be passed down to future generations.
