ItalyBirth:April 6, 1757Death:September 15, 1841Period:RomanticGenre:ChamberAlessandro Rolla was an Italian composer and violinist who lived from 1757 to 1841. He was born in Pavia, Italy, and showed an early talent for music. His father, a violinist, recognized his son's potential and began teaching him the instrument at a young age. Rolla quickly became proficient on the violin and began performing in public at the age of 12. Rolla's talent was soon recognized by the composer and violinist Giuseppe Tartini, who invited him to study with him in Padua. Rolla spent several years studying with Tartini, who was impressed with his student's abilities. Tartini's influence can be heard in Rolla's compositions, which often feature virtuosic violin passages and complex harmonies. After completing his studies with Tartini, Rolla began a successful career as a violinist and composer. He performed throughout Italy and Europe, and was particularly popular in France. He was appointed concertmaster of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan in 1782, and held the position for several years. Rolla's compositions were highly regarded during his lifetime, and he was considered one of the leading composers of his time. His works include numerous chamber music pieces, including string quartets, string trios, and violin sonatas. He also wrote several concertos for violin and orchestra, as well as a number of orchestral works. One of Rolla's most famous works is his Concerto for Viola and Orchestra in E-flat major. The piece was written for the violist Luigi Rodolfo Boccherini, and is considered one of the finest works for viola from the classical period. The concerto features a virtuosic solo part for the viola, and is notable for its lyrical melodies and rich harmonies. Rolla's chamber music works are also highly regarded, particularly his string quartets. His quartets are characterized by their elegant melodies, intricate harmonies, and virtuosic violin passages. They are considered some of the finest examples of classical chamber music, and are still performed and recorded today. In addition to his compositions, Rolla was also known for his teaching. He taught at the Milan Conservatory, and his students included several notable composers and performers, including Camillo Sivori and Giovanni Bottesini. Rolla continued to compose and perform throughout his life, and remained active well into his old age. He died in Milan in 1841, at the age of 84. Today, Rolla is remembered as one of the leading composers and violinists of the classical period. His works continue to be performed and recorded, and his influence can be heard in the music of later composers such as Niccolò Paganini and Franz Schubert.More....
