Newspeak is a contemporary classical music ensemble that was founded in 2003 by composer David T. Little and cellist Eileen Mack. The group is based in New York City and is known for its innovative and boundary-pushing performances that blend classical music with elements of rock, jazz, and electronic music. The ensemble's founding members were all graduates of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, and shared a passion for exploring new sounds and pushing the boundaries of classical music. In addition to Little and Mack, the original members of Newspeak included pianist James Johnston, percussionist Peter Wise, violinist Caleb Burhans, and clarinetist Brian Snow. Over the years, Newspeak has undergone several personnel changes, but the group has remained committed to its mission of creating new and exciting music that challenges traditional notions of classical music. Today, the ensemble is made up of a core group of musicians, including Little, Mack, Johnston, and percussionist Peter Ferry, as well as a rotating cast of guest performers. One of the highlights of Newspeak's career was the release of their debut album, "Sweet Light Crude," in 2009. The album featured original compositions by Little and Burhans, as well as arrangements of works by other contemporary composers. The album received critical acclaim and helped to establish Newspeak as one of the most exciting and innovative ensembles in contemporary classical music. In addition to their recordings, Newspeak has also performed at some of the most prestigious venues and festivals in the world. The group has appeared at the Bang on a Can Marathon, the Ecstatic Music Festival, and the MATA Festival, among others. They have also performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. One of the most memorable performances in Newspeak's history was their collaboration with the punk rock band Deerhoof in 2011. The two groups joined forces to perform a concert at the Ecstatic Music Festival that blended elements of classical music and punk rock. The performance was a huge success and helped to further cement Newspeak's reputation as a group that is unafraid to take risks and experiment with new sounds. In addition to their performances, Newspeak has also received numerous awards and accolades for their work. The group was awarded a Chamber Music America grant in 2010, which helped to fund their recording of "Sweet Light Crude." They were also named a New Music USA Impact Fund grantee in 2014, which provided funding for their project "The Architect," a multimedia work that explores the life and work of architect Louis Kahn. Overall, Newspeak is a group that is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of classical music and exploring new sounds and ideas. With their innovative performances, groundbreaking recordings, and commitment to collaboration and experimentation, they have established themselves as one of the most exciting and important ensembles in contemporary classical music.
