The UGA Hodgson Singers is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Athens, Georgia. The group was founded in 1971 by Dr. Daniel L. Afonso, Jr., who served as the director of choral activities at the University of Georgia (UGA) until his retirement in 2018. Under his leadership, the UGA Hodgson Singers became one of the most respected choral groups in the United States. The ensemble is composed of approximately 40 undergraduate and graduate students from various majors at UGA. The singers are selected through a rigorous audition process and are required to maintain a high level of musicianship and professionalism throughout their tenure in the group. The UGA Hodgson Singers have performed extensively throughout the United States and internationally, including tours to Europe, Asia, and South America. They have collaborated with numerous renowned conductors and orchestras, including the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. One of the highlights of the UGA Hodgson Singers' career was their performance at the 2002 World Choral Symposium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The group was one of only six choirs selected from around the world to perform at the prestigious event, which brought together some of the most talented choral musicians in the world. In addition to their international performances, the UGA Hodgson Singers have also been recognized for their excellence in the United States. They have won numerous awards and competitions, including the Grand Prize at the 2009 Marktoberdorf International Chamber Choir Competition in Germany and the Gold Medal at the 2011 World Choir Games in Cincinnati, Ohio. The UGA Hodgson Singers have also been featured on several recordings, including their critically acclaimed album "Lux: The Dawn From On High," which was released in 2017. The album features a collection of sacred choral music from the Renaissance to the present day, showcasing the group's versatility and technical prowess.
