His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Kinley showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. At the age of six, Kinley began taking formal music lessons. He studied piano, violin, and composition under the tutelage of his parents. By the age of ten, Kinley had already composed his first piece of music, a short piano sonata. In 1938, when Kinley was thirteen years old, his family fled Austria due to the Nazi occupation. They settled in London, where Kinley continued his music studies at the Royal Academy of Music. He studied composition under the guidance of Benjamin Britten and piano under the tutelage of Myra Hess. After completing his studies at the Royal Academy of Music, Kinley began his career as a composer. He quickly gained recognition for his unique style, which blended traditional classical music with modernist elements. His early works, such as his Piano Sonata No. 1 and String Quartet No. 1, were well-received by critics and audiences alike. In 1950, Kinley moved to New York City, where he continued to compose and perform. One of Kinley's most famous works is his Symphony No. 1, which he composed in 1955. The symphony is a powerful and emotional work that showcases Kinley's unique style. It was premiered by the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Leonard Bernstein, and it received critical acclaim. Throughout his career, Kinley composed a wide variety of works, including symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and operas. His music was known for its emotional depth, technical complexity, and innovative use of harmony and rhythm. In addition to his work as a composer, Kinley was also a respected music educator. He taught composition at the Juilliard School of Music for over twenty years, and many of his students went on to become successful composers in their own right. Kinley continued to compose and perform until his death in 1998. His legacy as a composer and educator continues to inspire musicians and music lovers around the world.
