The Esterhàzy String Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over three decades. The quartet was founded in 1988 by four talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create a unique sound that would set them apart from other ensembles. The founding members of the Esterhàzy String Quartet were violinists Richard Gwilt and William Hawkes, violist Asdis Valdimarsdottir, and cellist Jane Salmon. All four musicians had impressive backgrounds and had performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras and ensembles in the world. They came together with a shared vision to create a quartet that would showcase their individual talents while also highlighting the beauty and complexity of chamber music. The quartet takes its name from the Esterhàzy family, who were patrons of the arts and supported many famous composers, including Joseph Haydn. The Esterhàzy String Quartet has a deep appreciation for the music of Haydn and has performed many of his works throughout their career. Over the years, the quartet has undergone some changes in its lineup, but the core members have remained the same. Richard Gwilt and William Hawkes continue to play the violin, while Asdis Valdimarsdottir has been replaced by violist James Boyd. Jane Salmon remains the cellist of the quartet. The Esterhàzy String Quartet has performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls and festivals around the world. They have been invited to perform at the BBC Proms, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Salzburg Festival, among others. They have also collaborated with many famous musicians, including pianist Alfred Brendel and cellist Steven Isserlis. One of the highlights of the quartet's career was their performance of the complete cycle of Beethoven's string quartets at the Wigmore Hall in London. This was a monumental undertaking that required months of preparation and rehearsal, but the quartet rose to the challenge and delivered a series of unforgettable performances. The Esterhàzy String Quartet has also been recognized for their exceptional talent and artistry. They have won numerous awards, including the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Chamber Music and the Gramophone Award for Best Chamber Music Recording.
