Dom DeLuise was an American actor, comedian, and chef who was born on August 1, 1933, in Brooklyn, New York. He was the youngest of three children born to Italian immigrants, Vincenza and John DeLuise. His father was a garbage collector, and his mother was a homemaker. DeLuise grew up in a Catholic family and attended St. John's Preparatory School in Brooklyn. DeLuise's interest in music began at a young age. He learned to play the piano and the accordion and was a member of his high school's marching band. After graduating from high school, DeLuise attended Tufts University in Massachusetts, where he studied theater and performed in several productions. In the early 1960s, DeLuise began performing in nightclubs and on television. He appeared on several variety shows, including The Ed Sullivan Show and The Dean Martin Show. He also appeared in several films, including The Glass Bottom Boat and The Twelve Chairs. In 1970, DeLuise starred in the Broadway musical, "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." He received critical acclaim for his performance and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. DeLuise continued to work in film and television throughout the 1970s and 1980s. He appeared in several Mel Brooks films, including Blazing Saddles, Silent Movie, and History of the World, Part I. He also starred in several television shows, including The Dean Martin Show, The Muppet Show, and Candid Camera. In addition to his work in entertainment, DeLuise was also an accomplished chef. He wrote several cookbooks and hosted a cooking show on PBS called "Eat This!" He also appeared on several cooking shows, including Emeril Live and The Rachael Ray Show. DeLuise received several awards and honors throughout his career. In 1988, he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Comedy Awards in 1993. DeLuise passed away on May 4, 2009, at the age of 75. He is remembered as a talented and versatile performer who brought joy and laughter to audiences around the world.
