Roome was the youngest of three siblings and grew up in a family that had a deep love for music. His father was a pianist, and his mother was a singer, which inspired Roome to pursue a career in music. Roome's musical journey began at the age of six when he started taking piano lessons. He showed exceptional talent and quickly progressed to playing more complex pieces. At the age of ten, Roome started playing the violin, which became his primary instrument. He continued to take lessons and practice diligently, and by the age of sixteen, he had already performed in several concerts. Roome's talent did not go unnoticed, and he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He studied under some of the most renowned violinists of the time, including Yehudi Menuhin and Nathan Milstein. Roome's dedication and hard work paid off, and he graduated with honors in 1972. After completing his studies, Roome began his professional career as a soloist. He made his debut performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1973, where he played the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto.
