Franco Cesarini was a Swiss composer and conductor who was born on February 18, 1961, in Bellinzona, Switzerland. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Cesarini began playing the trumpet at a young age and later studied composition and conducting at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano. Cesarini's early works were influenced by the music of his Italian heritage, as well as by the contemporary composers of his time. He was particularly drawn to the music of Luciano Berio, György Ligeti, and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Cesarini's compositions often featured complex rhythms and harmonies, as well as unconventional instrumentation. In 1985, Cesarini won the first prize in the International Composition Competition in Corciano, Italy, for his work "Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra." This early success helped to establish Cesarini as a rising star in the world of classical music. Throughout his career, Cesarini composed a wide range of works, including orchestral pieces, chamber music, and music for wind band. He was particularly known for his compositions for wind band, which have been performed by ensembles around the world. One of Cesarini's most famous works for wind band is "Danzón," which was commissioned by the Swiss Army Band in 1994. The piece is based on the traditional Cuban dance form of the same name and features a lively rhythm and colorful orchestration. "Danzón" has become a staple of the wind band repertoire and is often performed at festivals and competitions. Another notable work by Cesarini is "Concerto for Tuba and Wind Orchestra," which was commissioned by the Swiss Tuba Association in 2001. The piece showcases the virtuosity of the tuba and features a variety of moods and textures. "Concerto for Tuba and Wind Orchestra" has been performed by tubists around the world and is considered one of the most important works in the tuba repertoire. Cesarini's other notable works for wind band include "Divertimento," "Suite for Wind Orchestra," and "Symphony No. 1." His compositions for orchestra include "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra" and "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra." In addition to his work as a composer, Cesarini was also a respected conductor. He served as the principal conductor of the Swiss Army Band from 1991 to 2001 and conducted many other ensembles throughout his career. Cesarini's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2009, he was awarded the Swiss Music Prize, which is the highest honor for music in Switzerland. He was also a member of the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences. Tragically, Cesarini passed away on July 17, 2021, at the age of 60. His death was a great loss to the world of classical music, but his legacy lives on through his compositions and recordings. Cesarini's music continues to inspire and delight audiences around the world, and his contributions to the wind band repertoire will be remembered for generations to come.
