Born in 1972 in Chicago, Illinois, Photinos grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist, which gave him a unique perspective on music. Photinos began playing the cello at the age of eight and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied at the Music Institute of Chicago and later attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree. He then went on to study at the Yale School of Music, where he earned a Master of Music degree. After completing his studies, Photinos began his career as a professional cellist. He joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1994 and played with them for six years. During this time, he also performed with other orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 2000, Photinos joined the contemporary music ensemble Eighth Blackbird, which was founded by a group of musicians from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for their innovative and dynamic performances, and Photinos became an integral part of the group. He has been with Eighth Blackbird for over 20 years and has performed with them all over the world. As a member of Eighth Blackbird, Photinos has been involved in numerous premieres of new works by contemporary composers.
