The Denver Pops Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in Denver, Colorado. Founded in 1980, the orchestra has become a beloved institution in the Denver music scene, known for its high-quality performances and commitment to community outreach. The Denver Pops Orchestra was founded by conductor and music educator Vincent C. LaGuardia Jr. LaGuardia had previously served as the conductor of the Denver Symphony Orchestra, but he wanted to create a new ensemble that would focus on popular classical music and provide opportunities for local musicians to perform. LaGuardia assembled a group of talented musicians from the Denver area, and the Denver Pops Orchestra gave its first performance in 1980. The ensemble quickly gained a following, and it has since become one of the most popular classical music groups in Colorado. Over the years, the Denver Pops Orchestra has had many talented musicians and conductors. Some of the most notable members of the ensemble have included violinist Yumi Hwang-Williams, who served as concertmaster for many years, and conductor Lawrence Golan, who led the orchestra from 2004 to 2017. The Denver Pops Orchestra has performed at many prestigious venues throughout Colorado and beyond. Some of the orchestra's most notable performances have included appearances at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, and the Colorado Symphony Orchestra's Summerfest. In addition to its regular concert series, the Denver Pops Orchestra has also been involved in many community outreach programs. The orchestra has performed at schools, retirement homes, and other community events, and it has worked to promote music education and appreciation throughout the Denver area. The Denver Pops Orchestra has received many awards and accolades over the years. In 2010, the orchestra was named the "Best Classical Music Group" by Westword, a Denver-based arts and culture magazine. Despite its many accomplishments, the Denver Pops Orchestra has faced its share of challenges over the years. In 2017, the orchestra announced that it would be suspending its operations due to financial difficulties. However, the orchestra's supporters rallied to its aid, and the ensemble was able to resume its performances in 2018.
